Gift a Big Lift for Local Lad
North Shore News, June 17, 2001
Cameron Blom is a beautiful seven-year old boy who was born with a number of difficult challenges.
He was born with cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. He has optic nerve hypoplasia, which renders him legally blind. He suffers from epilepsy. Cameron was born without a pituitary gland and so is on hormonal replacement therapy. He has no speech. Cameron is also delayed mentally.
Though Cameron is very challenged, he is an incredibly sweet and happy little boy who loves life. Unfortunately, as Cameron is getting older and bigger, it is getting more and more difficult for his mother to lift him in and out of his bed and the bathtub. The time had come to renovate the Blom family home to accommodate the special needs of Cameron.
Terri, Cameron's mom, got a quotation from a contractor for the work required and realized they could not afford it. It was then that she contacted Bob Rasmus of the Lynn Valley Lions Club to see if they could help out financially. Bob, who is also President of RJR Construction Management Ltd., had a better idea - he suggested that this company and the Lions Club could do the project together. On a Saturday in April, armed with crow bars, sledge hammers and hammers, several of the members started the renovation.
The work was completed in mid-May. The lift and rail system that were installed as part of the renovation made what once was a formidable task into a simple, enjoyable event. Terri now enjoys giving Cameron his daily baths. And Cameron and his sister Cally enjoy the rides in the lift.
